Joyce MacNeil (2009-2010)

Joyce MacNeil
Joyce just finished her undergraduate degree with a BSc. in Ecology at the University of Calgary. Her undergraduate work included a research project studying endocrine disruption in longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae) in the Oldman River. Intense agriculture and municipalities in the Oldman River Basin are sources of endocrine disrupting compounds that likely affect fish endocrinology. There is evidence that exposure to estrogen mimics in the Oldman River is contributing to the “feminization” of fish populations. Joyce tries to spend as much time outside as possible and really enjoys flyfishing. She also paints in her spare time.

After graduating from U of C, Joyce worked on a cumulative effects assessment project with the Canadian Water Network. She is now an aquatic biologist working at TERA Environmental Consultants (TERA). Her roles include: conducting fish and fish habitat surveys for various clients in the oil and gas industry, construction monitoring, report writing and regulatory applications. Joyce doesn't get to see the ever so charismatic longnose dace as much anymore but she maintains that the little minnow will always have a special place in her heart.
